Easy to see why a vegan lifestyle is so beneficial for diabetics of any type. The main reason for me to focus on making a permanent switch to veganism was for the sake of the animals - they will always come first in my mind. But another very helpful advantage is the health impacts. I must admit, I hated myself for the weight my insulin made me put on and this, coupled with my depression, started a dangerous eating disorder in which I would constantly binge eat and elevate my sugar levels. It was so bad that when my sugar levels were actually normal, my body would go into shock and I’d begin to lose consciousness, because it thought I was dying.

This is my second stint of becoming a vegan and I am proud to say it’s for life. I have sorted my health out and become more knowledgeable in the facts so that I can keep this up forever. And the results are already so fabulous - I can lower my insulin so that my body isn’t quite so dependent on it, meaning I can lose weight and also have a healthier body that no longer craves sugar. My sugar cravings as a result have all but completely vanished, and if I do get the odd urge, I grab some pineapple, grapes or mango (or an Alpro chocolate yoghurt if I can taste chocolate in my mouth!). I’m so grateful that we as human beings can really thrive on a plant-based diet, as I think it is so much more effective than a lot of medicines and treatments out there. I will always be on insulin and I have accepted that, but it certainly makes it a lot easier to come to terms with when I can be healthy with my condition and happy for helping the animals and planet at the same time. :)
